National Poetry Month, Day 10, 4/10/2025

I’m very much up in the air about Poetry Friday this week. I guess I’ll decide whether to post before the day is over. Last week, I posted just before 3 pm on Friday (2 pm my time), and it turned out to be too little, too late.

Hey, I know we’re all busy. And, I’m not the best at responding to everyone who posts (I usually respond to 3-7 people a week – usually people who post late, like me). And, I do understand why Poetry Friday starts on Thursday, but still….I find myself frustrated at the timing and the circumstance. That’s what I want to convey, not anger.

Okay, enough of my small rant.

I have to add that Friday was a bad day for additional personal reasons, as my husband had to visit the ER in the evening for a medical emergency. It’s been 24 years since his last visit to an ER as a patient, despite working in one for a similar length of time. It was not fun. He is doing fine and has gotten great care. We are relieved. So maybe some of my irritation towards last Friday is projection about those events, as well.

And, as you know, it’s been a month and a half since my dad passed away. We have been home for exactly a month, tomorrow. It’s been an adjustment as we’re still in the process of closing his home and assets.

I guess I have lots of reasons for frustration right now.

Onward!

Yesterday, I wrote a Villanelle for the first time. The word was rascal. I’m attracted to the form. It turned out okay, but I still need to look into it more. I feel like I don’t have it quite right.

Today’s prompt from the Verses of Ages Poetry Prompts for April 2025 is unusual.

When I read this prompt, the first thing that popped into my mind was the Tom Jones song, “It’s Not Unusual.” Jones was on the Ed Sullivan Show on April 21, 1968. I was four and a half years old.

Looking at the lyrics, hearing the song in my head (before I played the video), and thinking about the differences in time and place might give me some fodder for my poem today. I’m going to pause now and let it simmer in my subconscious for a few hours.

This afternoon, I went a different route. Here’s the result.

I also wrote a Poem in Your Pocket, but won’t share that today. I have been posting a new poem a day based on the Verse of Ages Poetry Prompts for April 2025. Here are the links:

The earlier poems (April 1st – 3rd) were left on last Friday’s post.

I need to give a special shout-out to Jone Rush MacCulloch, who took advantage of a special sale I had on Picture Perfect Poetry, the Ekphrastic Poetry Anthology I compiled and published last April 6th! Happy 1st Book Birthday! And, thank you, Jone!

Irene Latham has the roundup this week. Thanks for hosting, Irene.

Postscript: I will be updating this website in the coming weeks. Hope you stick around to see the results.
