Poetry Friday: Present in a Walk

Northwoods Wisconsin Trail. © Carol Labuzzetta, 2020.

Walking through the woods

newly covered in a thick white blanket.

Branches laden with layers not yet sewn

Onto the forest floor.

I feel cold air cut my face near my cheeks

which seem permanently fixed with my smiling expression.

Down a steep hill, we will have to later ascend,

Out onto the lake bed now solid enough to bear our weight.

Sunny, clear blue skies make the day seem warmer

Than the mere 12 degrees it happens to be now.

Our Labrador runs jubilantly from one side of the trail to the other,

Her white coat nearly blending with the snowy carpet.

Icicles form on her muzzle as she picks up the snow

Drool changing from liquid to solid sticks around her whiskers.

Christmas Day. A present to have a presence in the woods of Wisconsin.

Satisfied.

We return for a nap.

Lovely journey-poem Carol, and I agree it’s truly a gift to take a hike through a pristine nature area. And a tender ending with your doggie blanketed, thanks, Happy Holidays!

Carol, this was a beautiful awe walk through nature. I love being a voyeur into your winter world. Consider offering a part of this poem with one of your gorgeous photos for my Winter’s Embrace Gallery of Artistic Expressions.

Thank you, Carol. I would love to have part of the poem included in your Winter’s Embrace Gallery of Artistic Expressions. You’ve asked me to be included before and while I’ve agreed, I have a feeling there is something else I need to do for the inclusion in your galleries. Can you let me know. I would love to be part of your wonderful assembly of talent! Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Gorgeous poem and images, Carol, but I have to confess, I had a stabbing pain of reminiscence at the words: “mere 12 degrees”. Yowza! I lived in Madison, WI for 10 years and I don’t miss those temps. (Though my present home in Switzerland is not that much warmer, but it is warmer. 😉

Wow! Madison to Switzerland! How wonderful! Thanks for the compliments! Yes, 12 degrees is cold….we’ve had some cold winters here (sub-zero) of late. My oldest son visited Switzerland (Lucerne area) in 2013. He’d love to go back. I imagine it’s beautiful there! I miss being able to travel….Happy New Year, Bridget!
