This poem was inspired by a solitary walk I took this afternoon in my neighborhood. If you are feeling blah from being confined, get out for a walk – it will ease your mind!
A
is for a bright sunny day.
B
is for the berries, buds, & birds I notice along the way.
C
is for Corona Virus, the reason we walk alone.
D
stands for the dogs that I notice are few.
E
is Everyone, where are you now?
F
is for the fungus that springs up before the rest.
G
is the grass that is starting to green up.
H
stands for the houses,
shut up so tight with no humans in sight.
I
is for me, as I ramble along. Ice & snow are barely gone.
J
is the jungle gym I see at the park.
Empty it stands, except for a lark.
K
are the kids; the only two I see.
Wee little three-year-olds, playing and worry-free.
L
is a lemon that I wish to buy.
Bright and sour, it will make my taste buds fly.
M
stands for the milk that has disappeared
from some store shelves.
N
is the nap that now more can indulge.
O
are the opinions of too many souls.
Lying or guiding, it all takes a toll.
P
are the pines I see across the street.
Still like sentries in the schoolyard, tall and straight.
Q
is the quiet that fills the streets.
R
is the road that we often travel down,
filled with the quiet from above and around.
S
is the sleepiness I shook off to walk.
T
is the travel time taken to make a loop.
U
is the umbrella left on someone’s stoop.
V
is the valley behind my house.
W
is still the wonder in most everything I see.
X
is just a symbol of the canceled events we all have.
Y
is what we ask when we don’t really know.
Z
is the zipping of my jacket before I head home.
