On vacation, you’re lucky if you can figure out where the locals eat. We think we found such a place this past week on our trip to Banff, Alberta, Canada.
We followed the recommendations of a man we met while standing in line for a shuttle bus ticket to Moraine Lake. He was from Calgary. The line did not move fast. He picked up on our conversation because I wanted to use the bathroom and they were closed for cleaning. He recommended I go use the restrooms at Chateau Lake Louise. I did not do that as I felt odd about it.
Anyway, as conversations usually go on vacation he asked where we were from, where we were staying, and where we had chosen to eat – just out of curiosity or so he said. Having only been in town one night by then we were ripe for recommendations on eating establishments.
Having picked up on where we had chosen to eat our first night in town, he recommended an English pub called Rose and Crown.
I immediately remembered the name because I read about it on a piece of promo literature we picked up at the Banff area tourism office. Crown and Rose was listed as a place the locals go! And, now, a semi- local guy (Calgary is a couple of hours away) was recommending it.
Later that night, we decided to try it for dinner. Easily found and located on one of the busy downtown street corners in Banff, we went in. Sitting on the upstairs, outdoors patio, was not an option as it was a Saturday night and many others had beaten us to the outdoor seating above the street.
We settled for a table inside, of which we had our pick! Soon, a chirpy waitress gave us menus to peruse! Wow! So many choices! Lots of English pub food and some American staples as well. I chose a Guinness Beer and chicken Caesar salad. The Guinness was my first – a recommendation from my oldest son and I was not disappointed. One of my more cautious eaters had a Bison burger and Sheppard’s Pie was on tap for my husband.
A game room was empty so my two youngest played pool for a $2.00 Canadian coin. It gave my husband and I a chance to enjoy our beer.
We were happy we took the recommendation to eat at Rose and Crown for we enjoyed it very much! The food was tasty and the waitstaff cheerful and efficient. In fact, we liked it so much we went back the following night!
The patio still eluded us, so we’ll have to try again on a future trip! So, if you’re in need of a casual place with a diverse menu, lots of charm, and a pleasant waitstaff while in Banff, I would highly recommend Crown and Rose.
